The problem has now been solved, the five affected municipalities jointly reported on Wednesday. According to the municipalities, no data was stolen.
The software supplier of Eijsden-Margraten, Gulpen-Wittem, Kerkrade, Meerssen and Vaals was hit by the attack on 27 July. According to a spokeswoman for Eijsden-Margraten, customers have not been directly disadvantaged. “The attack was aimed at the software company, people with social assistance benefits could simply call or email and were helped,” said the spokeswoman. “For the most part, the service was able to continue. It just couldn’t be administered.”
Immediately after the hack, the system was examined by a specialized cybersecurity agency. The system can now be used safely again, the municipalities said on Wednesday.
