For the first time, national halal standards are being introduced in Russia. GOSTs were developed by the project technical committee for standardization No. 704 “Halal Products and Services”, which includes Roskachestvo. Izvestia was told about this in the organization on January 24.
The new standards were approved by orders of Rosstandart dated December 30, 2022. We are talking about GOST R 70401-2022 “Halal food production processes. General requirements for halal food products” and GOST R 70405-2022 “Halal products and services. General terms and definitions”.
The documents are put into effect from March 1 and June 1, 2023, respectively, noted in Roskachestvo.
“The need to develop and implement national halal standards is due to a significant increase in the production and export of Russian halal products. The approval of the first halal standards indicates that a national halal standardization system is being created in Russia, the purpose of which is to improve the quality of halal products and services, develop the conscientious competitiveness of Russian-made halal products and eliminate technical barriers to trade,” said the Deputy Chairman of PTK 704 “ Halal Products and Services”, Marat Nizamov, Head of the National Competence Center in the field of Halal Products and Services under the Federal Service for Quality.
When developing the first national halal standards, the requirements of international standards were taken into account, which in the future will contribute to Russia’s integration into international halal standardization systems as an equal partner and will create favorable conditions for Russian manufacturers to enter the global halal market, Roskachestvo noted.
As reported on November 10 last year, earlier, in order to form an effective and reliable infrastructure for the halal products market in Russia, a decision was made at the government level to create a national Center of Competence in the field of halal products and services on the basis of Roskachestvo. The activities of the center include standardization, certification, product quality monitoring, as well as the promotion of certified Russian halal products in the domestic market and abroad.
As noted, the Russian Federation supplies third countries with halal meat and poultry, sausages, and delicacies. In 2021, the volume of exported products in monetary terms amounted to $180 million. The main importers are Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
