Executions with lethal injection have only been allowed to be carried out in the US state of Oklahoma since the beginning of 2020 after breakdowns previously occurred. Now a convicted murderer has been executed.
Washington – For the first time in more than six years, the authorities in the US state of Oklahoma have executed a death row inmate.
The convicted murderer John Marion Grant was killed in a prison in McAlester with lethal injection, as the newspaper “The Oklahoman” reported. The now 60-year-old was sentenced to death in 1999 for the murder of an employee in a prison cafeteria – he committed the crime as an inmate. The Supreme Court had the suspension of execution ordered by another court lifted shortly before the execution.
In Oklahoma, executions with lethal injection were suspended in 2015. At the beginning of last year, the responsible authorities in the state then announced that they wanted to carry out executions with lethal injection again because a “reliable supply” of medication was guaranteed. In the most recent execution in Oklahoma in January 2015, a means was used that was not intended for an execution.
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, the next two executions are scheduled for November 18 and December 9 in Oklahoma. In 27 of 50 US states, the death penalty has not been abolished or suspended by a moratorium. dpa
