For the first time in ten years, the residents of the Indian region of Jammu and Kashmir can again elect a regional parliament. The election, which began on Wednesday and will last for three phases, is also the first since the central government abolished Article 370 of the constitution in 2019, thereby removing the special autonomy rights of the predominantly Muslim region. The then Jammu and Kashmir thus also lost its status as a federal state. Since then, it has been governed directly by New Delhi as a union territory.
