Guadalajara.- The Jalisco Health Secretariat (SSJ) confirmed the first case of monkeypox in the state. The patient is an American tourist who was at the Mantamar Beach Club, located in Puerto Vallarta, over the weekend.
On June 4, the state agency officially received notification from the National Center for International Liaison (CNEI) of the General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE) about a patient with probable monkeypox in Puerto Vallarta. This case was also reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) of the United States of America (USA).
The patient is a 48-year-old man, originally from Dallas, Texas, who visited Puerto Vallarta as a tourist with his partner. Since May 30, he began to present symptoms such as cough, chills, muscle pain and pustule-like lesions on his face, neck and trunk.
By June 3, the man contacted a doctor in Texas for help. The health expert recommended that he go to a health center and reported the suspected case to the CDC and the latter to the CNEI of Mexico.
Before presenting symptoms, the patient traveled to the German capital between May 12 and 16; he returned to Dallas on May 16 and on the 27th of the same month he arrived in Puerto Vallarta on vacation.
Monkeypox patient escapes
When the carrier of the disease went to a private hospital in Puerto Vallarta to treat his symptoms, the doctors informed him that it could be monkeypox and indicated that they would take samples and he would be in preventive isolation. However, the man refused and escaped from the unit.
After being notified, the SSJ ordered on June 4 to follow up on the personnel of Sanitary Region VIII Puerto Vallarta, but they were unable to locate the patient by any means of communication.
The patient and his partner left the place where they were staying with their suitcases on June 4, according to statements from staff working there. However, it is known that they had scheduled a flight from Puerto Vallarta to Dallas for June 6.
For this reason, the international area of Puerto Vallarta informed the National Institute of Mexican Migration and the Airlines about the patient so that they would not allow him to board any aircraft, and International Health was also notified.
The CDC informed the CNEI on June 6 that the patient traveled to the United States on June 4 without giving details about the flight on which he did so.
The patient was at several parties during his stay at the tourist destination. As a consequence, the Mexican health authorities reinforced epidemiological surveillance in health units in order to look for risk contacts and make recommendations to the population.
Caveat
So far the identities of the people who were in contact with the patient are unknown.
The SSC urges the population that attended parties at the Mantamar Beach Club between May 27 and June 4 of this year to monitor their health and see a doctor if they present symptoms such as headache, high fever at 38.5 C, swollen glands, muscle pain, general malaise and/or pustules on the body.
