On Monday, emergency services continued to fight the raging fires in the western Italian island of Sardinia.
And the Oristano region’s fire department announced on Twitter that the operation was continuing, as 60 units were battling the flames on the ground, with the participation of five aircraft.
The Italian Civil Defense indicated that Greece and France sent two planes to help put out the fire.
And fire raging in the western part of the island for a few days. And the Italian news agency (ANSA) reported today, Monday, that hundreds of people were forced to leave their homes, and thousands of hectares of land were destroyed by fire.
The strong winds helped spread the flames. A woman from the area told dpa that it was “terrible”, adding that the air everywhere smelled like fire, and fire and smoke could be seen from the beach and even from popular tourist areas.
The farmers’ association, Coldiretti, spoke of a “disaster” and great damage to agriculture, noting the loss of pastures, forests, and in some cases animals as well.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi expressed his solidarity with the people of Sardinia, in the early hours of Monday morning.
