Firefighters from Santa Catarina arrived in Petrópolis today (19) to reinforce the search for the missing. The city was hit by a storm on Tuesday (15) and still suffers from unstable weather. According to the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department, five soldiers and three sniffer dogs landed at Santos Dumont Airport and headed to Petrópolis.
Teams from Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Maranhão, Minas Gerais and São Paulo were already in the city to work together with the Rio Fire Department. The operations have 36 sniffer dogs to find missing victims.
The governor of Rio, Cláudio Castro, thanked his colleagues for sending the teams. “It is exciting to see the mobilization of the states in sending teams to Rio de Janeiro to help us with the searches in Petrópolis. Many thanks to the governors, the commanders of the Brazilian Fire Departments, and most of all, I thank the brave men who are joining us,” he said.
More men and dogs
According to the Rio Fire Department, more men and dogs from Rio Grande do Sul, Tocantins, Sergipe, Paraíba, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso, Alagoas and Paraná will arrive in the coming days. The teams will head to the Petropolitan municipality to continue with the search and rescue work.
The Secretary of Civil Defense and General Commander of the Fire Department of Rio, Colonel Leandro Monteiro, thanked the support of the National Council of Military Fire Brigades of Brazil (Ligabom), which, since the first day, has been monitoring the situation, giving the necessary support.
Since Tuesday, the work of Rio’s firefighters has only been interrupted when heavy rain starts to fall again in the city. As the soil is already soaked, the work is unsafe. Therefore, it is necessary to stop and only resume after it stops raining. Search and rescue operations for victims of the storm are distributed across all critical locations in the city.
