Eleven thousand euro fine for defamation of Vittorio Feltri by the court of Catania for the article on the first page of ‘Libero’ of 10 February 2017 entitled ‘Hot potato’ on the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi. “That shameful title of ‘Libero’ that offended not only me but all women”, Virginia Raggi, the first outgoing citizen of the capital, told Adnkronos. “I hope this episode serves as a warning and for seriously reflect on the issues of sexism and hate speech. Respect for women, and for people, must always come first ”.
The judge established compensation for damages to be established in civil proceedings, setting a provisional amount of 5,000 euros, the payment of legal costs and the publication of the sentence in the major national newspapers. The director responsible for the newspaper Pietro Senaldi was also on trial with Feltri for failure to control, convicted with a 5,000 euro fine suspended sentence. The competence of the case is rooted in Catania because it is the city where the copy of the newspaper was first printed. The prosecutor had asked for a three-year and four-month sentence for Feltri and eight months for Senaldi.
