The answer is not on the back of your ID
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) published an annual report on names and surnames in Spain. Mari Carmen and Antonio continue to be the most frequent names in the country. But this information is not the only one offered by the INE. Surely more than once you have wondered how many people you share your name and surname with. More than one will think that on the back of their ID they can find this answer, but this is nothing more than a myth. That number surrounded by the ‘<' symbol has nothing to do with the number of people who share a first and last name.
Even if you have believed the meaning of this number for a long time, the INE has the formula to discover how many people have the same name as you. In addition to the data from the latest report, the INE offers a search engine that allows you to find out how many people have the same name as you. Thanks to the interactive tool of the INE, available on its website, you can find out the exact figures. The operation is very simple, you just have to enter the name or surname in the corresponding field and press the magnifying glass icon.
How to use this search engine
Once inside the search engine, you just have to enter the name or surname you want to search for. Next, you can see a map with the geographical distribution of the searched name, the number of people who own it and the average age in which it is understood. You can select either the ‘First Name’ option or the ‘Last Name’ option in your search.
Example of the search for a surname with the interactive map of the INE. /
It is not possible to check the combination of names and surnames, that is, how many people are called ‘María García’, but this interactive map offers information such as: how many people have the same name; the average age of the namesakes; its geographical distribution by provinces of names and surnames; the historical evolution of the name (‘total men by birth decade’) and, finally, how many people share the same surname (first, second and both surnames).
These data come from the statistics of the continuous register, prepared from the register files available at the INE and updated every January 1. If the name you have chosen is very exotic, the data may not appear, since there must be at least 20 people registered with the same name to appear in the statistics.
