This Thursday (6), the British newspaper, Financial Timescriticized the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Dias Toffoli, for decisions that caused the “dismantling of the legacy” of Operation Lava Jato, in Brazil.
The newspaper cited the return of the Batista brothers (Joesley and Wesley) to political circles and the proximity of businesspeople to President Lula (PT) as signs of “a surprising return of misfortune”.
O Financial Times recalled that JBS, the Batista brothers’ company, admitted to having paid million-dollar bribes and maintained an exclusive department responsible for managing illegal transfers.
“The decade-long bribery investigation uncovered widespread corruption involving dozens of politicians and businesspeople during a period when Lula’s party was in power. Much of the work went into dismantling the results of the investigation — which recovered billions of dollars from companies involved — is in the hands of the STF and, in particular, of minister José Antônio Dias Toffoli”, says an excerpt from the text of the Financial Times highlighting that Toffoli was a lawyer for the PT and Lula.
In February 2024, the Financial Times criticized a decision by Toffoli that ordered the investigation of the NGO Transparency International within the scope of Operation Lava Jato, in which the organization would manage resources arising from the leniency agreement signed by the J&F group.
The newspaper also recalled that, in the previous month, Toffoli temporarily canceled the R$10.3 billion fine that was imposed on J&F within the leniency agreement signed with the Federal Public Ministry within the scope of Operation Greenfield. The injunction was authorized by the magistrate with lawyer Roberta Rangel, his wife, as a party, in a dispute involving one of the group’s companies.
