Digital Foundry has released a new Video analysis comparing the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro versions of Final Fantasy VII Rebirthconcluding that at 60 fps the improvement in visual quality is truly enormous. In particular, it looks like PSSR, Sony’s proprietary AI-based upscaling system, gives a huge boost to performance, without sacrificing detail.
Digital Foundry went so far as to say that the differences are as visible as those between day and night.
Visible improvements
For the analysis, a b-roll was used that covers the beginning of the second chapter of the game, the first one set in the open world. The footage was recorded to show the game on PS5 Pro at 60 fps, as in the PS5 performance mode. The introductory cinematic sequence in particular shows off the power of PS5 Pro.with crisp, detailed 4K visuals, versus the blurry 1080p of PS5’s Performance mode.
In short, Square Enix was able to significantly increase the visual quality thanks to the increased GPU power and the upscaler of the new console, which make the images appear to be rendered at truly higher resolutions.
It seems therefore that PlayStation 5 Pro is great where base PlayStation 5 titles have seen sacrifices in image quality. to improve the frame rate.
Of course, Digital Foundry’s is only the first analysis in this sense, made on a game that in itself presents a truly complex graphic side. We’ll have to wait and see what improvements it will offer on the rest of the PS5 titles.
