Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has won the favor of international critics and received very high ratings, so much so that on Metacritic it has an average rating of 93. At the moment it is the second game of the with the highest average overall, just behind the much-loved Final Fantasy 9, which boasts a metascore of 94.
Rebirth also has a higher average than the original Final Fantasy 7, the Game Boy Advance version of Final Fantasy 6, Final Fantasy 10, Final Fantasy 12 and Final Fantasy 14's Endwalker expansion, all at 92.
The most critically acclaimed Final Fantasy games
For completeness, let's see the top 10 Final Fantasy games with the highest metascore:
- Final Fantasy 9 – 94
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – 93
- Final Fantasy 10 – 92
- Final Fantasy 12 – 92
- Final Fantasy 7 (PS1) – 92
- Final Fantasy 6 Advance – 92
- Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker – 92
- Final Fantasy 8 – 90
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade – 89 (PS4 version averages 87)
- Final Fantasy 4 3D Remake (iOS) – 89
However, some important clarifications must be made. Metacritic was founded in 2001 and is therefore not very reliable for previously published titles, including most of the games in the Square Enix series. For example, Final Fantasy 9 only has 21 reviews for the original PS1 version, which means that the average is certainly less accurate compared to that of FF7 Rebirth, which already has 119. Furthermore, it is clear to say that the yardstick of the press changes over time, therefore comparing titles released even twenty or more years apart leaves little time to be found.
We remind you that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be available on PS5 starting from February 29. If you haven't already done so, we suggest you read our review.
