Change of course necessary
The Final Fantasy 16 sales, released exclusively on PS5, were lower than expected. The numbers initially fell in line with expectations, but the game then failed to meet its fiscal year goals due to a slowdown. The latest official data on copies sold speaks of 3 million units. Square Enix hasn’t updated it.
Even the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth sales were lower than expected. In this case, not even the initial numbers reached the internal objectives. Square Enix did not provide precise sales figures.
Same fate also for Foamstars: The game’s circulation was lower than expected, with a launch below expectations, despite its inclusion in PlayStation Plus Essential.
Square Enix remains confident about Final Fantasy 16, which could reach its 18-month sales goals. It should also be clarified that the sales of Rebirth and Foamstars are not necessarily terrible. They were simply declared below expectations (which is not a good sign anyway).
Square Enix then reorganized its development division into five console teams and one smartphone games team.
The company also says it bet too much on individual creativity. From now on, however, he will seek greater decision-making balance in the teams, giving more strength to the organization. One of the most anticipated games of the coming period, Dragon Quest 12, is still in development and does not have a release date.
The market did not react very well to Square Enix’s report, which saw its shares drop significantly. There is great fear for the fate of the company, which does not appear to have any major games planned for the next two years that could revive it.
