Madison Square Garden, New York, will witness how to write history of mixed martial arts (MMA, for its acronym in English). This morning from Saturday to Sunday a new numbered event will take place for the UFC, the largest MMA league in the world. It will be the 309th, which will lead to a fight that will be remembered for years. The sport’s all-time greatest, Jon Jones, will defend his title against Stipe Miocic, the greatest heavyweight in history.
This name for Jon Jones (27-1) is not empty words. The American became the UFC light heavyweight champion (205 pounds or 92.9 kilos) at the age of 23, being the youngest champion in the company’s history. In that division he fought 14 times for the champion beltemerging victorious in all combats. To complete his career, he moved up a division in March 2023 and also became champion.
For his part, Stipe Miocic is the heavyweight who has achieved the most success in the UFC. He became champion in May 2016, and in his first reign he would obtain three defenses in a rowthe first to achieve that figure. After losing the belt against Daniel Cormier he regained it in the rematch, and defended it once again. In total, he has won five fights for the belt, something that no one has been able to replicate. Although it comes from a defeat and more than three years without competing, the status is not lost, and it could surprise.
