After Facebook and Instagram, Youtube also wants to offer its users the opportunity to hide the number of negative reviews under their posts. The measure is intended to serve security in the digital space.
D.he online platform YouTube will in future hide the number of “I don’t like” ratings under uploaded videos. This should protect users from bullying, said the Google subsidiary on Wednesday. “Dislike attacks”, in which users try to increase the number of negative ratings for a video, should also be prevented.
Users will still be able to click their thumbs pointing down if they want to make it clear that they don’t like a video. However, the number of these clicks is no longer displayed. The user who uploaded a video will still have access to this data.
Respectful interaction desired
With this measure, Youtube wants to promote “respectful interactions” between creators of videos and other users. Users should feel “safe” about expressing themselves on YouTube.
The online platform had already experimented with hiding the number of so-called dislikes. Since May, users of the online platforms Facebook and Instagram have been able to hide the number of negative reviews under their posts. Critics see displaying “I like” or “I don’t like” ratings as detrimental to the well-being of younger users in particular.
