The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by Mexico, the United States, and Canada. From here to this tournament, FIFA authorities are in Mexico to evaluate the possible venues that could serve as headquarters for the duels to be played in Mexican territory. The Estadio Gigante de Acero, in Monterrey, could be one of the scenarios.
In this sense, Colin Smith, general director of FIFA tournaments and events, did not rule out that the new Tigres stadium could be an option to host a match in the 2026 World Cup.
“At the moment we are focused on the Rayados stadium, but when there are new buildings on the site, we will always be very interested as FIFA, how they could be used. Whether in the World Cup, as training facilities or events in the future. Obviously right now it would be speculating, we will have to wait and see about the stadium “
– Colin Smith, member of FIFA
According to the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, one of the main promoters of the new Tigres stadium, the construction of the stadium could begin in January 2022. The state president indicated that the venue will be a “first world” stadium and that the government will provide all the facilities for the project to be carried out.
