Castillo qualified with Ecuador last year for the upcoming World Cup in Qatar, in which it is classified in the same group as the Dutch national team. The Chilean Football Federation filed a lawsuit because, according to the association, documents clearly show that Castillo was born in 1995 in Tumaco, Colombia and not, as stated on its official documents, in 1998 in Villamil Playas in Ecuador.
“This does not worry me. The matter has been known for four years. It’s nothing new to us,” said the vice president of the Ecuadorian Football Federation, Carlos Manzur, to the Chilean newspaper La Tercera.
FIFA will discuss the matter on Thursday and will determine whether Ecuador can participate in the World Cup or whether Chile can take the place. Chile filed an appeal after losing its first case in June. Castillo himself will not be present tomorrow, neither physically nor online.
