Third place in the Nations League and England’s draw with Hungary allowed Mancini’s national team (1750.52 points) to pass ahead of Southgate’s (1750, 16). Ahead remain Belgium and Brazil, with France now third
It had been said: the “awkward” Nations League third place final against Belgium would not be so pointless. Today the official update of the FIFA ranking has arrived and Italy, thanks also to that success, climbs a position against England, clinging to fourth place. And, given that the World Cup in Qatar in winter 2022 is on the horizon, it is worth keeping an eye on the ranking.
the situation
–
To help Roberto Mancini’s cause there was also the draw of the English against Hungary in the last qualifying match, painless for Gareth Southgate’s team for the purposes of the standings but loaded with importance from the point of view of the ranking. In terms of points, in fact, the gap between the national team and England is really minimal: 1750.52 for the Azzurri, 1750.16 for the Three Lions. To keep an eye on with even more attention, however, is the seventh place, because below that one risks the second band in the World Cup. From this point of view, Italy seems calmer and all efforts can be concentrated on the direct clash against Switzerland scheduled for the next break in the championships in November.
the other teams
–
In reality, England have lost two positions compared to the previous update in which they were on the lowest step of the podium, leaving the field open to that France that the Nations League just won. The leading pair are, on the other hand, very distant and steady, with Belgium in front of everyone in the ranking and Brazil chasing at a safe distance. The only other movement in the top 10 is the overtaking of Spain against the Portuguese cousins right in the seventh place while, behind, Mexico and Denmark keep their place. Argentina is still sixth. Broadening the spectrum to the smaller national teams, for mere statistical taste we underline the upsurge of Indonesia and New Zealand which take the palm of selections that have climbed more places, 10, while on the other side the very disappointing Northern Ireland – mistreated in the group of ‘Italy – has lost 11.
