Unlike the Ballon d’Or from the French magazine France Football is initiated, the FIFA election for World Player of the Year 2020 will take place. The ‘The Best’ awards will be presented on December 17th, as the world association officially announced.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award ceremony will only take place virtually this year: “In accordance with the precautionary measures in the area of public health and FIFA’s guiding principle that health comes first, it was decided to only hold the award ceremony virtually”, announced the FIFA.
Just the alleged motto of FIFA – from absurdity on during the current international break – should cause many fans to frown. But the pathetic statements of the world association go further:
“The main players in football have taken on a lot of responsibility not only as players but also as role models in bringing hope to people and uniting the world in the current health crisis.”
“Having safely resumed competitions thanks to a combination of hard work and solidarity in our sport, football has provided many people with a rare source of comfort and joy. It is therefore important that FIFA recognize such accomplishments in this exceptional year.”
The voting mode remains the same despite the special omens: The captains and head coaches of the national teams will cast their votes, as will 200 selected media representatives. For this purpose, fans can take part in an online vote.
This procedure will determine the choice of the world goalkeeper and the world goalkeeper. Last year these were determined by a jury. Voting starts on November 25th and ends on December 9th.
Bayern goal machine Robert Lewandowski is expected to have great chances for the title this year. Whether he can break through the phalanx of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi again remains to be seen. Franck Ribery was finally able to sing a song about it in 2013 …
