Hybrid cars running on methane and LPG. As we have already seen, it is possible to transform a hybrid car to methane. The same transformation can also be done on a MHEV mild-hybrid engine and in particular on the new unit Fiat FireFly 3 cylinders. The methane system was installed on the new one Panda Hybrid City Cross from Ecomotive Solutions And Autogas Italy (Holdim group).
Below we see the consumption and the CO2 emissions of the two power supplies (petrol and methane) compared.
Fiat Panda hybrid methane, characteristics
L’methane system on the MHEV hybrid Fiat Panda provides for the complete installation of the Autogas Italia kit, consisting of a pneumatic and electronic part. The conversion kit is indeed equipped with an appropriate Electronic device, which interacts with the OBD system of the vehicle in order to maintain correct carburetion.
Switching from one fuel to another can be managed independently by the electronic system or manually by the driver via a selector placed on the dashboard of the Panda and from which it is possible to obtain information about the methane level present in the tanks. A new generation version of the switch is also available, which also allows you to view on a display information about the operation of the system.
How is the methane system of a hybrid car made?
How is the methane system done on a mild-hybrid car like the Panda? In addition to the presence of the electronic control unit, the kit includes the installation of two cylinders of 24 lt each. (diameter 203), placed on the loading plan and covered with a platform, to have a compartment free from protrusions and maintain a satisfactory load volume in relation to the original volume.
There charging socket to supply the methane to the tanks it is placed inside the compartment that already houses the filler for refueling with petrol. The charge of the two tanks can vary from 7 to 7.7 kg of methane (depends on the type of distributor it supplies) for a variable autonomy from 260 to 300 km.
When installing the methane tanks it is necessary to remove the spare wheel. To reposition it, the technicians designed a system of external fixing which allows you to put it back under the body in the rear part of the car. Alternatively it is possible to keep a small one on board compressor / repair kit for emergencies in case of punctures.
Fiat Panda hybrid methane, consumption and CO2 emissions compared
After the installation of the methane system, the hybrid Panda underwent a road test session to establish the i real fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as the differences between methane and mild-hybrid petrol.
The engine 3-cylinder 999 cc with 51 Kw (69 HP) of power, first of all, it has maintained the liveliness and agility that the 6-speed gearbox also allows during the “hybrid” phase. The latter, obtained through the electric motor generator from 3.6 Kw (5 HP) powered by a small battery placed under the driver’s seat, it recharges during slowdowns (charge level indicator on the dashboard). Below the 30 km / h it is possible to switch off the heat engine, for operation in only electric, placing the gear lever in “N”, condition also suggested by the indication that appears on the dashboard.
The road test aimed to evaluate performance and consumption both in petrol and methane operation and took place on a course of 123 km (46% highway, 44% suburban, 10% city) between the provinces of Alessandria and Asti touching varying levels from 116 to 305 meters above sea level, repeated in succession before a gas and then to methane.
How many km can you travel with 9 euros, on petrol or methane?
The consumption of gasoline was found to be of 6.5 L (18.7 km / L) with a cost of approx 9 euros, while the consumption of methane was 3.3 kg (37 km / kg) with an expense of 3.25 euros. Therefore, with the same cost of 9 euros on methane, the hybrid Panda runs well 340 km. In the test, the money saved was over 60%.
Methane hybrid car emissions
With the methane gas CO2 emissions go down from 89 to 40 gr / km, with a reduction more than 45%.
The reference price of the fuels used for the test was 1.385 for a liter of petrol and 0.985 for one kg of methane.
