FIA, Nielsen exits and Malyon enters
Last December 23rd, Steve Nielsen's farewell to the FIA was official, where he had held the role of sports director. However, the Federation was not caught unprepared and announced its replacement today: it is Tim Malyonalready in the federal ranks since 2019.
Who is Tim Malyon
48 year old Canadian who has lived most of his life in the United Kingdom, he obtained a master's degree in Mechatronics at the University of Leeds. Malyon is a familiar face in Formula 1, having started his career at Red Bull, where he worked for 10 years and 4 months. In the Anglo-Austrian team he held the roles of test engineer, race engineer and project engineer, even climbing on the podium on two occasions, at the 2011 Singapore GP and 2013 Korean GPboth won by Sebastian Vettel.
In 2015 he moved to Sauber, before joining BMW Motorsport in 2016 as chief engineer for the DTM, then dedicating himself to the same role in the German brand's Formula E team starting from 2016.
In 2019 the transition to the Federation, where for 2 years he was head of research and from September 2021 as head of security. In his last job he was among the creators of the ROC – the remote operations center based in Geneva, as project manager.
As sporting director of the FIA, Tim Malyon will now have the role of overseeing all sporting matters, including Race Direction and ROC and will report directly to Nikolas Tombazis, director of FIA single-seaters.
Malyon's first statements
After the official announcement arrived on the morning of January 8, Tim Malyon commented: “I am happy to take on the role of sporting director. We have already made significant changes to Race Direction operations with the support of the ROC and I can't wait to take everything to the next level. We are also engaged in a broad regulatory review of sporting issues.”
Niels Wittich was simultaneously confirmed as Race Directorwhile Steve Nielsen – the previous sporting director – confirmed his exit from the federal management at the end of January 2024.
