It’s not the solution to the problem
The images of the last test at Fiorano which involved Ferrari drivers Arthur Leclerc and Oliver Bearman (as well as Carlos Sainz) left no room for doubt: the FIA project linked to wheel cover to reduce the cloud of water raised by the cars in case of pouring rain (the so-called spray that hits the chaser) did not give the desired results.
The FIA single-seater manager, Nick Tombazis, declared that the Federation has abandoned this project which had a first test a year ago at Silverstone with McLaren and Mercedes involved. On that occasion the material used was more than one fenders than real wheel covers. The results at Silverstone were not satisfactory just as those at Fiorano were not when the wheels were practically all covered.
“Even if they have a little bit of an effect, they don’t have a significant enough effect to say this is the solution. So we’re back to square one – the words of Nick Tombazis interviewed by Autosport – we answered some questions. We know where we are at, but I don’t think the project will continue as such at the moment. Now we know that we have to find other ways to avoid running into the cancellation of races in the event of heavy rain.”
