The Dutch went on holiday much less in the corona year than the year before. The number of foreign holidays fell last year to 11.7 million, no less than 11.2 million less than in 2019. 17 million people also went on holiday in their own country, 1 million less than a year earlier, reports the Central Bureau of Statistics. .
Last summer it was very busy in the Netherlands: the accommodations for that period were booked in advance more often than in 2019 and also more often shortly before departure. The number of summer holidays in our own country rose by more than 6 percent compared to 2019, from 9.9 to 10.5 million.
Hotels and motorhomes were especially popular. The Dutch spent the night 30 percent more often in a hotel (660,000 more holidays) and 11 percent more often in a holiday home (290,000 more holidays) than one year previously. The number of holidays with a motorhome in 2020 was even 68 percent higher than in 2019, that is more than 140 thousand holidays.
Holidays with mobile homes and tents were clearly less popular. The number of holidays in a mobile home fell by 17 percent and there was 11 percent less camping with the tent or touring caravan. Groningen, Drenthe and Overijssel saw the number of Dutch holidaymakers each increase by more than 100 thousand in the summer compared to 2019. Zeeland accounted for an increase of 185 thousand holidaymakers, and Friesland and South Limburg both welcomed more than 200 thousand Dutch tourists. extra welcome than a year earlier.
The number of summer holidays with a foreign destination fell at an unprecedented rate: from 13.7 million to 4.4 million (67 percent). In the summer of 2020, people on foreign holidays stayed closer to home than in previous years, mostly in Europe: 98 percent, compared to 86 percent in 2019. Of these, 70 percent had one of the neighboring countries as their destination, in 2019 that was still the half.
