The 2022 single-seaters have not yet taken to the track for collective tests, as the traditional mutual “inspiration” between the teams has already begun. This was confirmed by Mattia Binotto, who at the press conference following the launch of the F1-75 revealed how a component replicated from a solution seen in one of the previous week’s presentations was added to the new Red: “To be honest in the machine presented today there is already an element copied from another that we have seen in the previous days. This is an example of how there are things that can be replicated quickly and others not“. The Ferrari Team Principal later revealed that the component in question is the additional profile placed above the leading edge of the flat bottom at the center of the car, visible laterally in the underbody at the central pillar of the Halo. The solution repeats what was first introduced by Aston Martin with the presentation of the AMR22 just a week earlier. The second flap triggers the generation of small aerodynamic vortices thanks to the flows that detach at its lateral ends, which can then be exploited to optimize the generation of load from the bottom of the car. The swirling structures in the aerodynamic flow are a coveted commodity in the 2022 regulation, due to the elimination of the bargeboards and the boomerangs in the center of the car, to which are added the new geometries of the front wing that led to the elimination of the well-known Y250 vortex.
Contemporary Formula 1 stands as the science of minimum earnings, where the overall performance is the result of detailed works, the benefits of which are hardly tangible individually, but which together contribute to improving the competitiveness of the single-seater. The second profile above the leading edge of the flat bottom fits right within this type of development, also arousing astonishment at the speed with which the Scuderia di Maranello has modeled, analyzed and produced a competitive solution, however small, in just seven days.
