Ferrari’s customer teams in Bahrain had a dream weekend. Haas And Alfa Romeo both in qualifying and in the race on the wings of a top-level power unit from Maranello, they achieved performances that can guide the season of the two teams that finished at the bottom of the Constructors’ classification in 2021. Alfa Romeo and Haas, from ninth and tenth come on, after a race they are in third and fourth place in the ranking reserved for teams and with well-founded hopes of accumulating other important points next weekend in Jeddah.
Power unit aside, the differences between the VF-22 and the C42 are not lacking. The Haas was built in Maranello in close physical contact with the Ferrari F1-75. In Hinwil, on the other hand, for example, they preferred to ‘build’ the gearbox and rear axle and at home instead of inheriting it directly from Ferrari for budget reasons cap. The home design and construction cost less than the purchase from Maranello and for this reason the men led by Frederic Vasseur preferred to ‘save’ in order to have more margin for spending over the season.
The podium dreamed of by Valtteri Bottas on the eve of the season is not so utopian if other races with excellent retirements occur. The Finnish driver thwarted a good qualifying with a start in which he skated clearly and found himself forced to climb back up to sixth place. According to the German newspaper Auto Motor und Sport the Haas VF-22 is 8 kilos heavier than the Alfa Romeo C42, true queen of the scales on the starting grid. In terms of speed, 8 kg are worth three tenths and therefore the aerodynamic work of Simone Resta’s men in Haas is excellent considering the weight gap with Alfa Romeo. Mercedes and Red Bull are the cars most in crisis with the heavy weight, to the point that the Milton Keynes team has only halfway achieved the ten kg slimming treatment it had set itself in Bahrain. Nor can it be ruled out that the problem with Verstappen’s steering link damaged during the pit stop is due to an attempt to gain important grams in every detail of the RB18.
