You will not find a much richer model history than that of Ferrari. Yet they will never release a continuation model, so not a reproduction of an old car. New copies of the 250 GTO will therefore not come, despite the fact that the brand still has some unused chassis numbers. That does not mean that a big nod to the past is not allowed. This is the Ferrari Daytona SP3, part of the Icona series of the brand. It’s a carbon fiber tribute to Ferraris of the 1960s and 1970s and in particular an ode to the 1-2-3 victory over Daytona in 1967.
With the Ferrari P3, P4 and 412 P, Ferrari took revenge on Ford, who triumphed at Le Mans six months earlier. That explains the name of the Ferrari Daytona SP3. The last addition stands for Special Projects number three. The SP1 and SP2, also from the Icona series, were the fantastic Monzas. Incidentally, the current Daytona is not a nod to the 365 GTB4. It was unofficially called the Daytona, but this was a front-engined Ferrari. The SP3 carries its engine behind the occupants.
The Ferrari Daytona SP3 gets a V12
To put it bluntly, the Ferrari Daytona SP3 is a LaFerrari without hybrid systems. Although, according to the brand, that is too simplistic: ‘Icona is more design-driven and we have a number of collectors who are very focused on that. While some elements are shared with the LaFerrari, the philosophy and strategy are completely different.” The V12 is the same 6.5-liter V12 as in the 812 Competizione, but in this case with 840 hp. The rev limiter only wakes up at 9,500 rpm. Due to the lack of batteries and an electric motor, the Daytona weighs only 1,485 kilos.
Speed wasn’t the goal
“We could have made it faster,” Ferrari told Top Gear. “But that wasn’t the goal. It was a challenge to get to 840 horsepower, and there were many problems with the cooling. But the Icona project brings a certain amount of mental freedom, and the lower volumes allow us to do some interesting things. For example, there is carbon around the back of the car, which comes from F1 and can handle even higher temperatures.’
The price of the Ferrari Daytona SP3
The Ferrari Daytona SP3 is not a one-off. Ferrari wants to build 599 units and each copy costs 2 million euros without taxes. Of course they are all already booked. The first deliveries will take place at the end of 2022.
