Ferrari recently took a significant step in its path towards sustainability. The house of the Prancing Horse has indeed the trigeneration plant was turned off located in its headquarters plant in Maranello: the decision is part of an ambitious plan to reduce the consumption of methane gas and increase the use of renewable energy sources, in line with the decarbonisation objectives announced during the Capital Markets Day of 2022.
Ferrari energy renovation
The trigeneration plant, active since 2009 and responsible for the production of electrical, thermal and cooling energy, has been deactivated three months in advance compared to initial plans. This shutdown represents a crucial step toward a 60% annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions, and a 70% decrease in methane gas consumption compared to previous levels.
To ensure continuity of energy supply, Ferrari plans to double the photovoltaic systems currently installedrising from the current 5 megawatts peak (MWp) to around 10 MWp by 2030. Furthermore, the share of renewable energy self-produced in the plant, together with the supply through Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), currently covers around 40% of energy needs of Maranello.
Renewable energy instead of methane
To support this transition, Ferrari has invested in cutting-edge technologies: the general electrical infrastructure of the plants was in fact renovated, with the complete renovation of the electrical substation and the installation of three new transformers of 40 MVA each. Updates that not only improve efficiency, but also ensure a greater resilience of the plant’s energy system. The total energy consumption of the Ferrari Group in 2023, so to speak, was 1,520 TJ, highlighting a decrease of 4% compared to the 1,580 TJ in 2022.
