The last edition of the Brazilian Grand Prix held in 2019 was not memorable for the Ferrari, since the race of the two SF90s ended prematurely due to the contact between Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel in the ‘Reta Oposta’, the straight that connects Curva do Sol, Curva-3, and Curva-4, or the Descida do lago. The two Scuderia di Maranello drivers were fighting for fourth position and the collision ended the race for both the German and the Monegasque.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have proved to be much more collaborative in this 2021 and Ferrari frames Brazil with the aim of consolidating the third place they have just earned in the constructors’ standings, where now the men in red are ahead of McLaren with 13.5 points of advantage thanks to the 18 points won in Mexico against the punticino snatched by Lando Norris, tenth at the finish after having started from the back of the starting grid. La Rossa thus presented the Interlagos weekend, which will be a new test bed for the updated power unit in the hybrid system: “Interlagos is a medium-high load circuit mainly due to the slow mixed section in the middle, which includes several low speed corners, but it is also a track that enhances the performance of the power unit since in the first and third sectors there are straights and curves to be covered in full acceleration. Overtaking is usually anything but impossible and for this reason it is the track loved by many drivers who, however, are also well aware of its pitfalls, starting with the bumps that are created naturally on the asphalt surface due to the soft and clayey on which it was built. Races in Brazil are often spectacular with overtaking that can take place at the first corner as well as at the braking of the third, areas in which the DRS can be activated. Even in the mixed section it is not impossible to try to overcome, but a lot of courage is needed. Often to complicate the lives of riders and teams, the weather was also set, with sudden downpours that changed the results of races that seemed written by now. This weekend could be no exception since the risk of rain is reported every day ”.
Ferrari in Brazil boasts eleven wins, seven pole positions and 31 total podiums. The last was signed by Kimi Raikkonen, third in 2018, while in 2017 the winner was Sebastian Vettel, holder of the last victory of the Scuderia di Maranello at Interlagos.
