Charles Leclerc sent a message on Thursday: “We are very good at preparing the car. Normally we don’t change the car much, we hope to take advantage of this feature this weekend ”.
The weekend is still long, the race pace has yet to be revealed, but in the meantime Ferrari (with Leclerc) took the second row on the Silverstone track, a track that was not considered a ‘friend’ of the SF21 on the eve.
An important result for the Scuderia, which after Baku was no longer able to appear in the first two rows.
“It was a good qualifying – commented the Racing Director, Laurent Mekies – on a very demanding track like that of Silverstone. Throughout the session, the fight behind the top three was very close: in Q3 nothing was enough to find themselves in the second or fifth row and our two drivers placed themselves at the two extremes of this group of six “.
“Charles worked very well all day and fourth place is a nice reward. Too bad for Carlos, who had the speed to be a little further on the grid this afternoon. We had carefully prepared this weekend which sees his debut. of the new format and I believe that the fruits of this work have been seen ”.
The gap between the best laps of Leclerc and Sainz was only 0 ”179, a margin which cost Carlos five positions behind his teammate.
The disappointment shown by the Spaniard at the end of the session is also due to not being able to repeat the same time obtained in Q2 in Q3, which would have been enough to guarantee him the sixth position.
“I am not entirely satisfied with the result of this qualifying – commented Carlos – I was at ease in the car, with a growing feeling and confidence from the start of the session until the end of Q2, when I was able to pass the cut with a good time. In the last attempt in Q3, however, I struggled a bit more, I made a couple of small mistakes here and there that prevented me from repeating myself. So I lost that couple of tenths that unfortunately cost me dearly today ”.
Leclerc, on the other hand, has nothing to blame for having brought the SF21 to the best position it could aspire to, given that Valtteri Bottas (author of the third time) preceded him by half a second.
“I am very happy with today’s result – confirmed Charles – getting to qualifying with so little time to prepare it makes things a bit complicated, but also more fun. We have done a good job of maximizing the potential of the car. I felt comfortable, especially in Q1 “.
“In Q2 I was not at the same level, but in the decisive phase I regained confidence and pace, closing P4, which I think was the best result we could have aspired to. As for the expectations for today, let’s see how things are going. we are entering unknown territory, with the first Sprint Qualifying in the history of Formula 1. We will use the FP2 session to prepare ourselves as best we can and give our best to bring home the best possible result ”.
Ferrari has laid an important foundation on which to build a good weekend, but starting with the FP2 session scheduled for today, the word will pass to long-runs.
“We are aware that in this weekend more than the performance on a single lap what counts is the race pace – confirmed Mekies – and on a track like this it is the most difficult test to face. Now we need to focus on the second chapter, the Sprint Qualifying, which poses new challenges for teams and drivers. It will be necessary to be good at making the most of the second hour of free practice available to better prepare for the great news of the weekend, without forgetting that the Grand Prix will be on Sunday ”.
