As in Nazi Germany, in Ferrara the word “Jew” appeared next to the shutter of a shop, with an arrow indicating the entrance to the business. “A gesture of absolute gravity that offends the entire city and its history”, according to the mayor Alan Fabbri, who adds: “We have taken action to remove the graffiti and to report the incident to the competent bodies, hoping that those responsible are identified and severely punished”.
The writing was canceled immediately, the story came to the attention of the Digos, which is carrying out all the investigations of the case. “We will not let this act discredit the city – continues Fabbri – I thank those who promptly reported the incident, allowing us to intervene promptly. The best response to the imbecility of the authors is immediate mobilization and collective condemnation, to suffocate the madness of those who would like to bring our lands back to situations that recall dark times. I express my closeness to the owner of the shop and my solidarity with the entire Jewish community of Ferrara, with whom we are working, with great common commitment, to promote the extraordinary Jewish tradition and culture which is the heritage of our city and of our history, in every field”.
Suspicions currently fall on a 24-year-old from Ferrara, the same one who on the evening of Tuesday 7 March had been stopped and identified by the carabinieri for offensive writing on the wall of a shop in Piazza Trento Trieste: the canister appears to be the same but they are in progress further investigations by the State Police.
