The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, said this Tuesday (6) that “an innocent person has been convicted”, after the publication of the sentence of six years in prison and disqualification from holding public office against the vice president of the country, Cristina Kirchner.
“Today, in Argentina, an innocent person was convicted. Someone that the legal powers try to stigmatize through complacent judges who go around in private planes and luxury mansions on the weekends”, wrote the president on his Twitter account.
Fernández thus referred to the announcement he made on Monday (5) that he would ask the Justice to investigate businessmen, judges, prosecutors and former civil servants for allegedly being part of a corruption scheme.
The representative argued in his message that the conviction of the former president (2007-2015) “is the result of a trial in which the minimum forms of a fair process were not addressed”, starting with “the principle of not judging twice the same act”.
Fernández expressed his solidarity with the vice president “knowing that she is the victim of an absolutely unfair persecution”.
The vice-president was sentenced this Tuesday to six years in prison and life disqualification from holding public office in trial for irregularities in the tendering of road works during her two terms as president (2007-2015).
In Brazil, the national president of the PT, Gleisi Hoffmann, also used Twitter to criticize the verdict of the Argentine Justice. “All support to fellow Cristina Kirchner, victim of persecution and politicization of the Judiciary. The PT is on your side, go ahead, the truth will win!”, she wrote.
Cuba’s dictator, Miguel Diaz-Canel, also spoke out. “We reiterate our repudiation of politically motivated lawsuits and reaffirm all our support and solidarity with Cristina Kirchner against judicial and media harassment against her,” he said.
Former Bolivian President Evo Morales added to the criticism. “Our most vehement repudiation and condemnation of the judicial and fraudulent coup that tries to truncate the political rights of our sister Cristina Kirchner. After failing in the attempt to assassinate her, today they are trying to eliminate her politically. Strength, sister Cristina, the fight continues!”, he wrote.
