So far this year, there has been a 27% reduction in femicides in CDMX, said the head of government claudia sheinbaumwhile Ernestina Godoy assured that violent deaths of women fell 39% in the first quarter of 2022, compared to 2020.
Through his Twitter account, after the presentation of the Monthly Report of the Alert for Violence against Women in Mexico CitySheinbaum pointed out that during the first three months 19 femicides were registered, as well as the apprehension of 26 alleged femicides.
While, during the presentation of the report, the head of the Mexico City Attorney General’s Office (FGJCDMX) stressed that from January 2019 to date, the institution under his charge managed to link 7,620 alleged aggressors of women to the process, including sexual harassment and abuse, rape, family violence and femicide.
Likewise, Godoy highlighted the 43% increase in the imputation of aggressors, going from 152 in 2019 to 218 this year, through a “specialized persecution policy”, with which 14 investigation folders were also reclassified, not only for eradicate the cases, but also to “make violence against women visible”.
And it is that Sheinbaum also assured at that point that it is not that there were fewer femicides in past administrations, but that they were hidden because “violence against women was hidden.”
Similarly, the owner of the CDMX Government referred that in his administration 12 actions have been implemented to combat violence against women, emphasizing the creation of the Public Registry and DNA Bank of sexual aggressors, the Olympia Law, the training of police personnel to detain sexual aggressors, the reinforcement to the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Femicides, the improvement in attention in the FGJCDMX, the creation of the moons for the attention of gender violence, and the construction of Safe Paths, among others.
Intentional homicides, by trend
On the other hand, Sheinbaum rejected that his administration accumulates more intentional homicides in CDMX than the three previous administrations, assuring that, although he received the city with an upward trend, which began between 2015 and 2016, these rates have dropped to register 1.9 of these crimes a day.
“An increase that we received on the rise and we have said it, the day we arrived at the City Government was the day with the most homicides in the Mexico City and homicides grew more or less until May 2019 and as of May 2019 there is a constant reduction”, he stressed.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Head of Government, acknowledged that the accumulated is true, but argued that the conditions at the beginning of each administration have been “markedly different” and that the current one received the worst conditions. “The present Administration received the City at the worst time since 2000.”
“It is evident that the number of homicides observed during the first 40 months of the present Administration are greater than those observed in the first 40 months of the three previous administrations. What this data does not reflect is 1) the historically high levels with which the City received, and 2) the unprecedented reduction in intentional homicides in the last 3 years,” he added.
This, in response to a note from Reforma, which highlights that the Sheinbaum administration accumulates the highest number of homicides in the first 40 months, breaking a record.
