The party leaders, from the group leader in the Senate Massimiliano Romeo, do not agree with what is reported in the Potenti bill
The Lega senator’s bill proposal Manfredi Powerful which foresaw the prohibition of female titles in official documents in favor of only male ones will not be there. The League has made it known that this is a completely personal initiative of the Tuscan senator who has previewed the draft of the new bill to the press agencies. Among the articles, fines of 100 to 5000 euros were foreseen for anyone who violated the rule of “masculine first” and had dared to write “lawyer”.
The proposal in question has proven divisive even within the League itself. The party’s leaders, from the group leader to the Senate Maximilian Romeodo not agree with what is reported in the Potenti bill: “It does not respect our line”. And they have asked for its immediate withdrawal.
The response from the political and cultural world was immediate and the controversy also mounted on social media: the senator and linguist Aurora Floridia (Avs) has promoted a letter sent to the President of the Senate Ignazio La Russa and signed by 76 senators, in which they claim the freedom and the right to be called with the feminine gender: “This proposal represents a serious step backwards in the long and tiring fight for gender equality – she commented -. Language is a powerful tool for inclusion and recognition of identities. Erasing the feminine means denying visibility and dignity to women who hold roles of responsibility and prestige in our society”.
The title of the senator’s bill Powerful ‘Provisions for the protection of the Italian language, with respect to gender differences’ immediately showed its objective, that is, to “defend” the language from what is considered the drift of political correctness (without naming it). In order to “preserve the integrity of the Italian language and in particular, avoid the improper modification of public titles from “symbolic” attempts to adapt their definition to the different sensibilities of the time”.
Hence the “prohibition of the feminine gender for neologisms applied to institutional titles of the State, military ranks, professional titles, honours, and positions identified by acts having the force of law”.
