The King Felipe VI travels to Puerto Rico this Monday to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the foundation by the Spaniards of the city of San Juan, and will carry out institutional and cultural visits.
During his stay on the island, the monarch will meet with the governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, and with the mayor of San Juan, Miguel Romero, who have been decorated with the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic, one of the highest distinctions in Spain.
As the king recently explained, his presence in that historic city “will mean a new reaffirmation of that great history that unites us with Puerto Rico and the United States.”
Throughout the day and a half that he will spend on the island, Felipe de Borbón will visit several institutions and exhibitions, in the cultural and historical context of the celebrations of the V Centenary.

The King of Spain, who is traveling accompanied by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, and the Secretary of State for Foreign and Global Affairs,
Ángeles Moreno will also participate in an economic and business forum in which several Spanish companies present on the island participate.
According to the official agenda, the monarch will visit the Santa Catalina Palace, where he will be received by the governor of the island, with whom he will tour the facilities of La Fortaleza.
He also plans to visit the convent and the House of Health of the sisters of the Congregation of the Servants of Mary, a congregation founded by the Madrid
María Soledad Torres Acosta, who was canonized in 1970 by Paul VI.
At the Mayor’s House, the King will receive the Key to the City from the Mayor.
In addition, he is expected to visit the San Juan Museum, the San José Church and the Carnegie Library, which presents an exhibition of the legacy of Pau Casals that he will visit accompanied by Marta Casals, president of the Foundation.
Felipe VI traveled to Puerto Rico for the first time as king in March 2016, when he and Queen Letizia inaugurated the VII International Congress of the Spanish Language (CILE) in San Juan.
Now the city celebrates five centuries since its foundation in 1521.
The first Spanish settlers arrived on the island of Puerto Rico in 1493, but it was in 1521 that the first governor, Juan Ponce de León, relocated the capital city from the original settlement in Caparra to what is now known as Old San Juan.
At the end of his visit to Puerto Rico, the king will travel to Honduras to attend the inauguration of the new president, Xiomara Castro, where he will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.
