The meeting was held as a result of a request made by Vox at the end of July and is part of a strategy of “political normality” in which it has also been seen with Yolanda Díaz
Alberto Núñez Feijóo accelerates his national political agenda with a series of meetings with the leaders of the different parties. A strategy that was uncovered this Wednesday after learning that last week he met with Santiago Abascal. It was the first time that both met since the Galician leader agreed to the presidency of the PP and they preferred to do it in secret, away from the media spotlight. This was confirmed this Wednesday by sources from Genoa and, later, ratified by Vox. The meeting, they explain, was “correct” and lasted about an hour. It was held as a result of a request made by Vox at the end of July. Both leaders shared impressions on the national political context, “agreeing in part with the diagnosis of the situation, although differing in the way of dealing with it.”
It is not the only meeting at this level with leaders of other parties that Feijóo has had and hopes to have. He already did it with the president of UPN, José Javier Esparza, before the summer, to share reflections about the situation in Navarra. Especially after the formation based in Pamplona expelled its two deputies, Sergio Sayas and Carlos García Adanero, after they broke the voting discipline and voted in February against the electoral reform proposed by the Government. A movement that caused a great shock in Congress, but had no consequences thanks to the fact that the popular parliamentarian Alberto Casero tipped the balance in favor of the Executive by making a mistake in voting.
Feijóo also met two weeks ago in the Senate with the leader of the Canarian Coalition, Fernando Clavijo, to strengthen relations and with an eye on possible investiture alliances if he finally won the 2023 generals.
Both meetings were known, but Genoa revealed another less expected meeting this Wednesday. As Feijóo himself acknowledges, he met with the person in charge of the Sumar platform and de facto coordinator of United We Can in the Government, Yolanda Díaz. The leader of the popular ones assures that it was the second vice president who contacted him to maintain the encounter
Feijóo’s agenda also includes a future meeting with the president of the PNV, Andoni Ortuzar, as the Basque politician acknowledged last Sunday at the Alerdi Eguna (Party Day in Basque). A meeting for which a date has not yet been defined, but which both parties hope to set in October, but it served the nationalist leader to pressure Pedro Sánchez to comply with investiture agreements.
From Genoa it was always said that priority would be given to the PNV and the president, before meeting with the president of Vox, something that made Abascal’s party feel very bad. Feijóo rectified that position last week and decided to meet with the one who could be his partner after the next general elections, in view of the majority of the polls.
