The president of the Xunta demands calm and let “things flow and be done with total normality”
The shower of praise and location to which he presents his candidacy have not made a dent in Alberto Núñez Feijóo. The president of the Xunta de Galicia pointed out that until the national board of directors of the PP meets this Tuesday he will not take any steps in that direction, and then we will see why he has until mid-March.
Hot, at the exit of the meeting of the territorial leaders early this Thursday, he warned that he was not going to say anything about “filling a vacancy that is not such or about the presentation to a congress (of the PP) that is not convened ». To do it before, he added, “it would be very surprising if a man comes to say that he is presenting himself.” He also warned his party colleagues that he appreciated “the unanimity” of the support, but reserved the last word. “I am the one who has to decide if he presents himself”, and taking that step now, when Pablo Casado has not resigned and continues to lead the PP, would be “deepen the frivolization of politics”. He demanded calm and let “things flow and be done with total normality.”
Hours later, upon arriving at the Santiago airport this Thursday morning, he was even more cautious about his candidacy. He pointed out that this was not the time to talk about it, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “We are not going to talk about the congress until it is convened” because at this moment it is only “a future and uncertain event.” On Tuesday, he insisted, it will be time to start talking about candidates and go through “the democratic iteration of a congress of a democratic party.”
Among the leaders of the PP there are no doubts. “Either it’s Feijóo or it’s chaos,” said one of the territorial leaders before the meeting with Casado. But they also recognize at the heights of the party that the “enthronement” process can go awry if an applicant appears, who would not be someone recognized but a militant or a mayor of a small municipality. That would force, if all the endorsement requirements are met, to open the primary process.
It’s a long shot, but not impossible. In the PP, meanwhile, the chorus of voices in favor of Feijóo taking the reins of the party does not stop growing. Even the president of the CEOE employers’ association, Antonio Garamendi, broke a spear in his favor: “He is a very qualified person with a lot of experience.”
