The crisis in the Suez Canal is causing a domino effect in the auto sector, through delivery delays, shortages of spare parts and an increase in car thefts in cities. The complaint comes from Federcarrozzieri – the association of Italian body shops – which reports growing difficulties for companies in the sector and inconvenience for citizens.
“Through our members in the area we are recording an increase in critical issues for the entire automotive sector,” explains the association. “The current situation in the Red Sea is causing not only an increase in delivery times for new cars, but also a shortage of spare parts on the market, which translates into longer repair times and higher costs for motorists”
“Many components of the cars in circulation today, in fact, travel on ships and cannot be replaced by parts produced in European factories,” adds president Davide Galli. “This is the case, in particular, of the so-called laminates, i.e. bonnets, fenders, doors, bodywork parts, etc., essential elements of car repairs as they represent the first parts of the cars to be damaged in the event of an accident road. In the absence of these elements, the repair process is interrupted, since the car without them cannot drive safely.”
Based on a survey conducted by Federcarrozzieri among its members, at the moment the car manufacturers that have the greatest problems with the supply of spare parts are Dr, MG, Lynk & Co, SsangYong, Nissan and Renault, and the waiting times for the delivery of spare parts to body shops varies from a minimum of 15 days to a maximum of 60 days.
“If the situation does not return to normal in a short time, we will see a surge in the costs of car parts as a result of demand enormously exceeding supply and, consequently, increasingly expensive and time-consuming repairs,” warns Galli. “Added to all this is the issue of commissioned thefts: these days more and more cars arrive at our body shops plundered of parts such as mudguards, mufflers, mirrors, headlights and other essential components”.
