The conference ‘Thirty years of activity for the benefit and protection of patients with allergic, atopic and respiratory diseases’, open to patients, families and volunteers, will launch the celebrations for the thirtieth anniversary of the activity of Federasma and Allergie Odv. The event is scheduled for October 12th at 10.30am, in the setting of the Salvatore Maugeri Foundation, at the Irccs Maugeri Tradate (Varese), where the volunteer organization was born.
Over the last thirty years – we read in a note – a real revolution has been achieved in the treatment of respiratory, allergic and atopic pathologies. The introduction of innovative therapies has led to a significant improvement in patients’ lives. At the same time, the active involvement of these in their own treatment path, the growing attention to prevention and the advent of technological and organizational innovations on the web, from artificial intelligence to digital health, have opened new frontiers for the future. This is a rapidly evolving and highly topical context, as also demonstrated by the G7 Health meeting underway in recent days, which is debating the challenges that the country is called upon to face to guarantee and protect the health of the population.
“Thirty years ago, when it was founded at the Irccs Maugeri of Tradate Federasma e Allergie, we had fewer pharmacological tools – explains Antonio Spanevello, director of the Scientific Programs of the Salvatore Maugeri Foundation – Just think that therapies with monoclonal antibodies did not exist, which revolutionized patients’ lives, there was less attention to primary and secondary prevention, it was extremely complex to influence health policies and the involvement of patients in the treatment process was a pipe dream. In recent years the Federation has been a fundamental partner to build a dialogue with all stakeholders, so that allergic and respiratory diseases were brought to the attention of the institutions, and in supporting the most severe patients both in the management of the disease and in daily life activities in care, engagement and research”. The conference will be an opportunity to take stock of the goals achieved in the defense of patients’ rights, highlighting those still to be achieved for access to treatment, prevention and support for their families too. During the meeting, the implications of scientific progress in the knowledge of atopic, respiratory and allergic diseases, such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), atopic dermatitis and urticaria, with a particular focus on inflammation of type 2, common pathogenetic basis for many of these pathologies.
“Federasma e Allergie Odv has always represented a guide and support for patients, but above all a bridge between them and the healthcare system – states Mario Picozza, president of Federasma e Allergie Odv – In these thirty years we have witnessed incredible scientific progress and therapeutic, but what makes us most proud of the work carried out as a voluntary organization is that we have contributed to transforming the role of the patient, who today is finally recognized as an active part in his own treatment path that every person, regardless of the pathology or the complexity of their case, can have access to the best care available and concrete support in daily life, remaining alongside and working together with the medical, academic and institutional world”.
In the afternoon, a round table will involve representatives of the institutions and the association network to talk about prevention and advocacy with the presentation of the Patients’ Manifesto that Federasma e Allergie presented in 1996 and the other requests that have been included in the most recent Manifestos. The event is made possible thanks to the sponsorship of Sanofi, Chiesi Italia and Glaxosmithkline. To participate, registration is free by filling out the form at the link: https://shorturl.at/Ijd4T.
