“We are also noticing that discrimination is becoming more open and uninhibited again. Some people apparently perceive the fact that right-wing extremists receive more support in elections as democratic legitimation for inhumane attitudes,” said Ataman.
Before the introduction of the General Equal Treatment Act, employers could have openly looked for “young, pretty secretaries” or bluntly written “no applications from foreigners”. “After the law was introduced, this happened less often. Today we are noticing that people are again increasingly receiving rejections that include racist or anti-disabled insults or sentences like “We don’t need people like you here.”
Violent attacks on refugees, Muslims, Jews, but also queer people and people with disabilities have increased. “In these cases we are not talking about discrimination, these are criminal offenses. But we are also seeing a clear increase where we are responsible. In addition to more racist and anti-Semitic discrimination, we are also seeing significantly more cases of sexual harassment in the workplace.”
There is a high number of unreported cases. The last representative survey was a few years ago and showed that one in three people had experienced discrimination.
