“He died peacefully, of old age, this morning, in his home in Gard (in the south of France ed), surrounded by his relatives”. This is the press release entrusted to France Presse through which Mariane Hoepfner Trintignant announced the death of her husband Jean-Louis Trintignant at the age of 91 whose funeral will be celebrated privately.
Trintignant was an actor who marked the history of French cinema and theater. The French premier, Emmanuel Macron, defined it “A formidable talent that has accompanied our lives”. A photo of the actor born on 11 December 1930 in Point Saint Exprit de Gard, in Provence, was enough to convince director Dino Risi to join the then 32-year-old at Vittorio Gassman aboard the Lancia Aurelia B24 to form the iconic trio of the cult film ‘Overtaking’ from 1962, a film in which Trintignant and Gassman are the two protagonists – Roberto Mariani and Bruno Cortona respectively their names in the film – grappling with a formative journey, to the sound of reckless overtaking on the Aurelia.
The film with which he revealed himself to the general public was ‘And God Created Woman’ by Roger Vadim from 1955 in which Trintignant starred alongside Brigitte Bardot. The masterpiece that finally delivered it to the general public was ‘One man, one woman’ of 1966 of Claude Lelouch in which Trintignant is the protagonist together with Anouk Aimée.
