The future of Michel Barnier’s government is in the hands of Marine Le Pen. The leader of the French far right will decide on the duration of the executive appointed by President Emmanuel Macron. The Elysée Palace has tried to spread the message that all sectors of French politics were involved in the project except the left, precisely the one that won the legislative elections almost two months ago. However, Le Pen surprised on Sunday by denying that she had participated in the appointment of en Matignon.
“I am not Macron’s human resources director,” said the leader of the RN deputies on her return to her electoral stronghold of Hénin-Beaumont, in Pas-de-Calais, after having participated in the nomination of the new prime minister. The new government will be “judged by its actions,” she warned.
“I believe that only a prime minister from the National Rally can implement the National Rally project,” he stressed after clarifying that he had “no negotiations with the president” and recalling that his 126 deputies hold the key to a possible motion of censure. “We were received, we said what our criteria and conditions were,” he clarified.
«Respectful man»
However, Le Pen said that “it would not be very reasonable to propose a censure immediately.” She was confident that Barnier would certainly live up to “our hopes on a number of important issues.” While she described the new prime minister as “a respectful man,” she said that one should not forget “that he spent his entire career in a political family that did nothing but disappoint the French.”
Barnier said at his inauguration that he wanted to form a cabinet that was not only right-wing and to open the negotiating table to “all those who want it”, without excluding the participation of people from the left. This sector rejects this possibility, as the socialists announced from the beginning.
