Madagascar is on the brink of starvation, which will be caused by global climate change for the first time in the world. This development of events was predicted by the official representative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Jens Larke, reports TASS…
Larke noted that the country is experiencing the worst drought in the past 40 years, which makes it difficult for tens of thousands of local residents to provide themselves with food. “People face severe malnutrition, and 28,000 people live in conditions similar to hunger, when life is in danger,” he said.
OCHA has asked the international community to provide $ 231 million for a special program to fund humanitarian assistance to one million Madagascarians. A representative of the department said that donors have already provided $ 120 million, but this amount was not enough to provide citizens with food, water and medicine.
In July, it was reported that former UN chief Ban Ki-moon considered global climate change to be the root cause of the COVID-19 pandemic. He stressed that humanity needs to fight not with signs of problems, but with their primary source. The former UN Secretary General said that it was the greedy behavior of people that influenced the climate and caused subsequent disasters.
