A survey of more than 1,300 parents of students shows that student families have come to respect teachers more in the covid-19 pandemic. According to the survey, 89% of respondents acknowledged that teachers have a more challenging job than they believed before the start of the pandemic. The same slice, 89%, also said they believed that, in order to teach classes, more preparation is needed than they imagined before the pandemic.
The Survey of Non-Attendance Education from the Perspective of Students and Their Families was carried out by Datafolha, commissioned by Itaú Social, Lemann Foundation and BID (Inter-American Development Bank), between August 13th and September 16th, 2021, by telephone, with 1,301 guardians who accounted for a total of 1,846 children and adolescents aged between 6 and 18 years in the public network, in all regions of the country.
According to the survey, the efforts of public school teachers in Brazil to promote quality education during remote classes improved the perception of students’ families regarding the teaching profession. “By following their children’s education more closely through remote education, parents understood how important it is to look inside the school and be more active. In the survey, we understand that the professor was fundamental in this approach”, highlighted the superintendent of Itaú Social, Angela Dannemann.
According to the survey, 67% of those responsible said they feel that teachers are more respected by students than before the pandemic; and 73%, that the main support in returning to in-person classes comes from contact with teachers, who are available to answer any questions.
“Teachers have an essential role in the development of students, but the pandemic further reinforced their importance for a good relationship between family and school. Teachers have become more valued by the school community, parents and guardians, and they are also being fundamental for the good resumption of classroom classes”, highlighted the executive director of the Lemann Foundation, Denis Mizne.
The survey also shows that, for 35% of the families, having teachers available to answer questions is the most important initiative among those offered by the school, staying ahead of actions such as meetings with the school team (19%), general school guidelines on how to support students in their return to in-person activities (12%), information about students’ learning or difficulties (9%), guidance on the content that will be passed on or revised (8%), or groups of parents or guardians to exchange ideas and experiences (5%).
