There Fallout TV series is available from today on Amazon Prime Video and represents a real media event, but perhaps some connections between this production and the video game series are not yet clear, so it may be useful to shed some light thanks to the words of Todd Howard of Bethesda, who explained in particular some elements such as whether it is canonical or less and what period is it set in? compared to the events of the games.
Todd Howard he played the role of executive producer for the TV series, and was heavily involved in the entire production, therefore the connection with the videogame series is ensured, in addition to fidelity to the original material, working closely with the showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dwoerest.
First of all, as far as the historical place of the TV series compared to video games, this one pretty much fits after all the events staged in the video game series, placing themselves in the most advanced part of the timeline.
The year in which the events told in the TV series take place is in fact 2296following that of the most advanced video game chapter, namely Fallout 4, placed in 2287. This is the timeline between video games and TV series:
- Fallout 76 – 2102
- Fallout 1 – 2161
- Fallout 2 – 2241
- Fallout 3 – 2277
- Fallout: New Vegas – 2281
- Fallout 4 – 2287
- Fallout TV show – 2296
A canon series, which adds to the events of the video games
As for the canonicity of the story told in the TV series, well this seems to be it confirmed by the authors themselves. Therefore, the Fallout TV series is in fact canon and officially falls within the lore and general background of the video game series.
“We take what happens in the TV series as canon,” Bethesda director Todd Howard said in an interview published by Vanity Fair. “Which is fantastic, because there is someone else who takes the work we do and translates it into other forms.”
“It's a new story which happens, in fact, after the events we saw in the games,” showrunner Wagner also explained during an official press conference on the TV series, reporting that the authors did not want to directly translate the things seen in the video games.
“The show comes from a series that has been going on for 25 years adding creativity and thoughts,” Wagner reported. “For this reason we thought that the best thing to do was to continue with this way of doing things, rather than going back to things already done.”
According to the showrunner, “what has worked well for Fallout over the years is that it has passed from hand to hand, through changes and alterations that have made it a living thing. So, we thought it was best to try to add something new from us and build a new piece of history to add to the rest.”
We remember the launch date and time of the Fallout series on Amazon Prime Video, available from today, April 11, and our review of the series.
