D.he Prime Minister of the internationally recognized government in Libya, Fajez Sarradsch, has announced his resignation. He wants to hand over the official business to a new government by the end of October, said Sarradsch on Wednesday in a televised address.
After the overthrow and death of long-time ruler Muammar al Gaddafi in 2011, Libya sank into civil war. On the one hand there is the government of Sarradsch in Tripoli, on the other there is a rival government in the east of the country, each of which is supported by different militias and states.
The prime minister’s greatest challenger was East Libyan general Khalifa Haftar, one of the key players in the Libyan civil war.
The conflicting parties have recently come closer. The talks had reached a new preparatory phase, the aim of which was to unite the Libyan institutions and prepare for new elections. The two sides had recently agreed that a new government should be formed and that elections should be held within 18 months.
