PETROBRAS
The week was busy in Brasilia. On Monday (June 27, 2022), Petrobras’ Board of Directors elected Caio Paes de Andrade as the new president of the state-owned company. He is the 4th to command the company in the government of Jair Bolsonaro.
Still on Petrobras, the former president of the company Roberto Castello Branco said that on his corporate cell phone there were messages that could incriminate Bolsonaro.
Because of this, the PT leader in the Chamber of Deputies, Reginaldo Lopes, he requested the Federal Public Ministry to investigate Castello Branco for malfeasance.
GOVERNMENT IN TROUBLE
On Tuesday (June 28, 2022), the opposition in the Senate formally asked the creation of a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate suspicions of corruption in the Ministry of Education during the administration of Milton Ribeiro.
The application submitted by the senator Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP) received signatures from 31 senators, 4 more than necessary to file the request.
Now, the decision on the installation of the commission rests with the president of the Casa Alta, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
At night, the situation got a little more complicated for the government. In a report published by the news portal metropolises, Caixa Econômica Federal employees accused the bank’s president, Pedro Guimarães, of sexual harassment.
The women reported intimate touches without authorization and inappropriate invitations to a working relationship.
With the revelations, on Wednesday (29.jun.2022), Guimarães resigned of the Caixa presidency. In a Letter sent to Bolsonaro, said the situation was “cruel, unfair, unequal”. He also denied that the allegations were true.
On the same day, Bolsonaro named Daniella Marques to take charge of the bank. She was secretary of Productivity and Competitiveness at the Ministry of Economy and right-hand man of Paulo Guedes.
Still on the case, in audio released by Metrópoles and confirmed by Power 360Pedro Guimarães says that his management at the bank was not a “democracy” and that he didn’t care about the opinions of his subordinates.
The Public Ministry with the TCU (Union Court of Auditors) asked for an investigation against the former president of Caixa for moral and sexual harassment.
BENEFITS SPEC
Another highlight of the week was the approval in the Senate of the PEC of Benefits, on Thursday (30.jun.2022). The text authorizes the government to create and expand social programs in an election year.
The rapporteur’s opinion Fernando Bezerra Coelho (MDB-PE) estimates a cost of BRL 41.25 billion outside the spending ceiling.
Among the main points of the proposal are:
- increase of R$ 200 in emergencies in Auxílio Brasil;
- increase in the gas voucher to the equivalent of one cylinder per two months;
- voucher R$ 1,000 for self-employed truck drivers;
- aid for taxi drivers until the end of 2022.
Now, the PEC will be analyzed by the Chamber.
ECONOMY
In the economy, numbers are a little encouraging.
According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the unemployment rate fell out to 9.8% from March to May this year. It is the lowest percentage since the quarter ended in January 2016.
The number of unemployed reached 10.6 million, a decrease of 11.5% in relation to the previous quarter.
And on Wednesday (June 29), the government announced an amount of R$340.8 billion for the 2022/2023 Crop Plan. The value considered the highest in history is 36% higher than the previous biennium.
The increase is Bolsonaro’s nod to agribusiness, one of the groups he has the most support for.
MY ENTREPRENEUR, MY LIFE
And in the electoral race, the main candidates try to attract more and more the support of businessmen.
At the beginning of the week, on Tuesday (June 28), the former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (EN) had dinner with some of them in São Paulo. He spoke of lowering interest rates, rebuilding the Brazilian image abroad and strengthening the real against the dollar.
already the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), Ciro Gomes (PDT) and Simone Tebet (MDB) participated in an event promoted by the CNI (National Confederation of Industry).
In front of an audience of around 1,000 businessmen, Bolsonaro said he intends to enlarge the number of sectors benefiting from the payroll exemption.
The president also stated that Brazil is well-regarded in the world and signaled again the recreation of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce in an eventual 2nd term.
The measure too was defended by Ciro Gomes. the pedestrian also spoke of implementing an industrial foreign trade policy “sophisticated”.
In her speech, Simone Tebet said that a sustainable economy is needed that seeks a balance between agribusiness and the environment. The emedebista also stated that, if elected, she will carry out a tax reform in the first 6 months of government.
