The Russo-Ukrainian war is also being fought on the internet, with the Russia who decided to block access to Facebook throughout its territory, as a retaliation for the exclusion throughout the European Union, the United Kingdom and Ukraine of pro-regime newspapers RT and Sputnik.
The explanation came from official sources, namely from Roskomnadzor (Federal Service for the Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Communications), who added that Facebook has also limited access to accounts from other organizations related to the media, in violation of the Russian laws.
Nick Clegg, the president of global affairs of A half, the Facebook company, said that in this way millions of Russians will not be able to receive important information, will have no way to express themselves and will not be able to connect with their distant families. Clegg then added that Meta will do everything in her power to restore the services so that they remain available, so that everyone can express themselves confidently and organize themselves to act.
After the invasion of Ukraine, Roskomnadzor had asked Meta not to verify the facts reported by four regime newspapers and to remove the related labels from their posts, but the company refused.
Facebook is not the only social platform to have blocked Russian newspapers. The others are YouTube, Reddit, Spotify and Roku.
