Facebook announced last Friday, 8, that it banned ads for the sale or purchase of land located in protected areas, mainly in the Amazon, on its Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms. Mark Zuckerberg’s group began modifying the terms of use to officially ban this practice.
“Now we’re going to compare the ads displayed on the Facebook Marketplace with a database set up by an international organization with authority on protected areas to identify ads that may violate this new policy,” the group explained in a blog note.

Facebook does not specify whether this practice is widespread, nor does it respond to an AFP request about the scope of the phenomenon. But the BBC revealed, in an investigation in February, the existence on the Facebook Marketplace of numerous advertisements proposing the sale of parcels of the Amazon rainforest of up to several hundred hectares completely illegally.
“Based on specific criteria, Facebook will seek to identify and block new ads in protected areas,” the group stated in its message.
“With complementary information such as this database, we add another hurdle for anyone trying to advertise these lands on the Marketplace,” added Facebook, stating that these are the “first steps”.
