Van Amersfoort Racing has completed its Formula 3 line-up with the announcement of the hiring of Argentinian talent Franco Colapinto.
The Buenos Aires driver is undoubtedly one of the most interesting prospects to have appeared in the world of open wheels in recent years. Colapinto, in fact, in the last two seasons has raced in Formula Renault Eurocup and in Formula Regional European Championship always with the colors of the MP Motorsport team, obtaining two victories in 2020 and as many in 2021.
Last year, the Argentine driver added that in LMP2 to his single-seater commitment by racing both in the European Le Mans Series and in the WEC.
For Colapinto now comes the promotion in Formula 3 with the rookie Van Amersfoort Racing team. Both for the Argentine and for the Dutch team, the first rounds will be used to become familiar with the new reality while waiting to be able to fully express the potential available.
“I really enjoyed my first time driving an F3 car,” said Colapinto of the end-of-season tests that took place last year in Valencia. “Obviously it is a more powerful car than the one I drove in Formula Regional, but at the same time the driving characteristics are similar to those of an LMP2”.
“The notable difference compared to an LMP2, however, will be the tire management, but I like this aspect of racing”.
“I can’t wait to get on track with Van Amersfoort Racing. They have an important history and have taken their entry into Formula 3 very seriously. I’m really excited to be part of this adventure, the whole team is motivated ”.
Rob Niessink, CEO of Van Amersfoort Racing, welcomed the newcomer: “We are thrilled to have Franco with us this debut season in F3. Looking at his career, he has shown not only to be a talented driver, but to adapt quickly to all circumstances ”.
“We were already watching him as a possible candidate and his prices increased during the end of season tests in Valencia.”
