After announcing the names of Oliver Bearman and Arthur Leclerc, Prema Racing only needed the last piece to complete the line-up of drivers who will take the Formula 3 title in 2022.
The mystery was revealed this morning when the Italian team announced that they had hired Jak Crawford. The US driver born in 2005 is one of the most interesting prospects of the Red Bull nursery and had already made a name for himself in 2020, performing well in both Italian and German F4.
For Crawford, however, the move to Formula 3 last season was anything but simple and he finished the season with a haul of 45 points and thirteenth place in the standings.
In light of the engagement in Prema, it seems that the Academy Red Bull wants to try to retrace with Crawoford the same path followed with Hauger last year. Even the Norwegian had struggled to express himself at high levels in the first year in F3 with the Hitech GP, while when he wore the colors of the Italian team the steamroller admired in 2019 in Italian F4 returned.
That Crawford is a talent to watch is also evident in the light of the results obtained in 2021 in the Euroformula Open. The American, in fact, has joined this championship to that of Formula 3 and despite having had to skip some appointments, he managed to close the season in third position in the standings, taking home 8 victories.
“I am very excited to join Prema for my second FIA F3 season and to participate in the Asian Formula Regional Championship with them,” said Crawford. “I am very eager to pick up on what I learned last year in my season. as a rookie, and hoping to emulate the success that other riders have had with the team in the past ”.
Team principal Rene Rosin welcomed the American driver to the team: “We have always kept an eye on Jak. He has established himself as one of the most promising drivers since his beginnings in Formula 4, and we will finally have the chance to work together ”.
“I am sure there is enough potential to aim high for 2022. We have already had the chance to work with him in testing, and we look forward to continuing this process in the Formula Regional Asian Championship. I am equally happy to continue our work with the Red Bull Junior Team to develop the next generation of high profile riders. “
